“So, Clark tells me you two were having quite the intimate conversation when he called you for dinner,” Diane says.

Isabel is in the middle of taking a drink of her wine and immediately starts coughing. “Mom!”

Diane and Clark laugh but they don’t seem bothered in the least. While Isabel tries to recover from her coughing fit, they go about eating their dinner. “What? We’re a little surprised, that’s all. We didn’t realize there was anything to this thing between you two.”

We share a look but don’t elaborate. At this point, neither of us know what to say.

“Well…” Diane asks. “Is there more going on than we thought?”

“Mom, stop. When we’re ready to talk about it, we will.”

“Okay, honey. That’s fine.” Clark and Diane exchange glances followed by small smiles. All of these unspoken forms of communication that happen when no one else is looking. The same thing goes on with Brad and Clark. It’s suspicious but I don’t know how to mention it to Isabel without offending her because it’s about her family.

“You two have had a chance to settle in for a few days now so how would you feel about having dinner out this weekend?” Diane asks.

“Dinner out would be fun. Where were you thinking? This is Verrik’s first chance to experience a restaurant on Earth.” Isabel gives me a fun, flirty smile and it makes me want to throw her down on the table and kiss her senseless.

“It would be over at Margaret and Bill’s house. They’ve been excited to see you now that you’re back, honey,” Clark says.

That sweet smile melts away, quickly replaced with creases in her forehead. She sets her fork down but instead of answering, she reaches for her wine glass. The table is silent as she tips the glass back and drains the contents before reaching out and refilling it a second time.

“And why would I want to have dinner with Margaret and Bill?”

“Who are Margaret and Bill?” I ask, leaning close to her ear.

“Brad’s parents.”

I sit back in my chair and nod, reaching for my own drink. At this point, I’m going to assume Clark and Diane are trying to get Brad and Isabel back together. Maybe Margaret and Bill are even in on their plan. I don’t know why they would do it, especially after it sounds like Brad treated her so poorly. But I’ve reached my limit for how much I’m willing to put up with this nonsense. As long as I’m here with Isabel, she’s mine. Until she tells me she wants me to fly back to Niri and give her my blessing to be with Brad, it’s not going to happen.

Brad isn’t going to happen.

“They love you like a daughter, Isabel. Even though you’re not with Brad anymore, they still care about you. They want to hear about all of the amazing things you’ve been doing on Niri this past year,” Diane says.

“Look, Mom. I came home for you. Because you’ve had a really shitty year dealing with cancer and I didn’t want you to spend Christmas alone.
